Kamishibai Magic Stories
A 1-hour family workshop at Rua Red with Japanese kamishibai (picture-card storytelling) plus art-making. Kids draw magical scenes or try simple calligraphy with Sumi ink. English & Japanese. Suitable for ages 4+.
Saturday, 21 Feb
13:30-14:30
What to expect...
A family workshop that starts with kamishibai (Japanese paper theatre): the storyteller flips through illustrated cards in a small wooden frame while telling a tale. Families are encouraged to join in using their own home languages—different voices, words and sounds are welcome, so each telling shifts with the group in the room. After the story, everyone makes their own “long story” artwork. Younger kids can draw magical places and characters in bold colours, while older children (and adults) can try Japanese calligraphy and Sumi ink, experimenting with brush marks and simple Kanji. You can also add writing styles, symbols, and languages from your own family background. It’s a relaxed, hands-on session where you listen first, then make something together, and you go home with the artwork you created.
