About

A historic castle set within the Howth Demesne where most family visits focus on the surrounding estate rather than the interior. Families usually walk up the long drive, pass the castle, and continue onto woodland paths leading to Aideen’s Grave, a Neolithic portal tomb, and viewpoints such as Muck Rock overlooking Howth, Ireland’s Eye and Dublin Bay. In spring, the rhododendron woodland is the main draw and the paths become noticeably busier. Access inside the castle is different — it remains a private residence and entry is only possible during arranged guided tours on select dates. These tours suit older children who enjoy local history, while younger children tend to get more out of the outdoor walks and open space.
