Historic castle and gardens on a big demesne in Malahide with plenty to do in one place. Families usually start with a guided tour of the furnished rooms, which takes around an hour and gives a sense of how the Talbot family lived. Outside, the walled botanic garden has quiet paths, glasshouses and the Butterfly House, which stays warm and humid and tends to be a favourite with younger kids. The Fairy Trail runs through the West Lawn and keeps children busy spotting fairy doors and following clues. There is lots of space for a picnic, wide paths for buggies and enough variety to keep toddlers through to tweens occupied for a couple of hours.
